Why STEAM?

At Woodcrest School, we believe in giving our students every opportunity to learn what they’re passionate about. In our weekly STEAM classes (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), students use the Engineering Design Process to explore real-world scientific practices that are grounded in creativity. Through imagination, collaboration, and inquiry, Woodcrest students investigate the world around them while learning how to use their inherent creativity to solve problems. 

Annual Woodcrest STEAM Fair

Woodcrest students have the opportunity to show off their inquiry and design skills each year during our annual STEAM Fair. Using the Scientific Method or the Engineering Design Process, all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade plan and conduct investigations and design a project that communicates their findings. Our teachers help guide students through the process of asking questions and identifying problems that interest them. Each year, our community is blown away by our students’ ingenuity and knowledge as they present their experiments, designs, and data. 

What Makes a Good STEAM Project?

A good STEAM project typically demonstrates creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills while effectively integrating elements of science, technology, engineering, arts, or math. It should address a real-world problem or concept, engage the audience, and showcase the student’s passion and understanding of the subject matter. Good STEAM projects often involve hands-on experimentation, critical thinking, and collaboration, resulting in a tangible outcome or solution. Students can use any medium to showcase their projects. Many students have demonstrated proficiency using video, art, animation, and experiments.

FAQs About our STEAM Fair

The STEAM Fair is an event where students showcase projects they’ve created that integrate elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, or Math (STEAM). These projects can encompass a wide range of creative endeavors, from scientific experiments and technological innovations to artistic performances and engineering designs.

A good STEAM project is one that you are proud of! Choose a topic you’re passionate about, research its real-world relevance, and think creatively about how to integrate multiple STEAM disciplines. Set clear goals, plan and organize your project, seek guidance, stay flexible, and practice presenting your ideas to create a successful STEAM fair project.

STEAM fairs encourage creativity, innovation, and critical thinking by allowing students to explore connections between different subjects and apply diverse skills to solve real-world problems.

We hold the STEAM fair in the Spring every year around March or April, allowing our students to demonstrate the skills they’ve learned this school year.

STEAM fair projects can truly be whatever the student can imagine, such as animating short films, science experiments, interpretive dances, paintings, performing with musical instruments, building video games, and programming robotics.
